About David Watkinson

After graduating in 1994 from Leeds Metropolitan University with a degree in Fine Art David was awarded a grant by the Princes Youth Business Trust and set up Century Ceramics, a small business making stoneware ceramic ornamental garden planters and small animal sculptures.

The business developed until there were over 50 different designs in the range leading to a very cramped workshop and an exhausting number of shows to exhibit at and galleries to supply.

Over the years it has been the animal sculpture side of the business which has become my real passion but it seems less and less time in which to explore this passion to it's full extent.

I made the decision in 2006 to get off the treadmill and concentrate on developing a body of work which really inspires me. At the 2007 RHS Hampton Court flower show I will be be unveiling the results of this labour, a totally new range of outdoor animal sculpture. The most important thing for me is that my work has life, there must be attitude, vitality, a sense of movement and narrative.

Hopefully I have succeeded in capturing some of the spirit of the animals I have sculpted, and have managed to convey the natural energies of the animals that surround us.
